Baltic porter in Poland tends to be bigger and thicker than American-brewed examples. Maybe it’s because our own brewers have emulated “lighter” examples from other countries in the region; or maybe it’s because they have emulated each other without really knowing the source material.

History of Baltic Porters Porter got its start as an answer to the higher hopped pale ales gaining popularity in Britain among the town gentry in the early 18th century. Brewers took their signature sweet brown beer as a template, tweaked and adjusted it until they had something brand new. Most notably, the Baltic porter uses lager yeast, or cold-fermented ale yeast, lending a cleaner taste relative the fruiter ales. (This is how Jack’s Abbey, who only produces lagers, can legitimately offer a porter.)
